Why install a pergola?
Enjoy the terrace longer
Shade in the height of summer, shelter in case of rain, lighting and supplementary heating for September evenings: the pergola extends the outdoor season by several months.
Under the Belgian sky, this flexibility makes all the difference between a terrace that is used and a terrace that is looked at through the window.
Create a real room outside
A pergola structures the space: it defines the outdoor dining area or the lounge corner, and connects the house to the garden.
With integrated lighting, infrared supplementary heating, and side blinds, it becomes a dining area usable even during the cool spring and autumn evenings.
Keep the house cooler
Attached to a south or west facade, it shades the glazed areas of the ground floor and limits overheating of the living space in summer.
The adjustable blades allow warm air to rise, preventing the greenhouse effect of a closed roof.
The 3 steps of installation
Installing a pergola requires precisely defining its use, checking the configuration of the terrace, and anticipating the technical constraints of the project. From choosing the model to the foundations, including connections and water drainage, each step must be prepared to ensure a durable installation.
Our pergola models
Choosing a suitable pergola allows for creating a comfortable, protected outdoor space that can be used longer throughout the year. Bioclimatic, wall-mounted, freestanding, or solar, each configuration meets specific needs depending on the available space, exposure, terrace use, and desired level of equipment.
- Thermally coated aluminum structure
- Motorized adjustable slats, watertight when closed
- Rain and wind sensors, LED lighting, optional side blinds
The most versatile solution for the Belgian climate, and the most requested.
The slats of the bioclimatic pergola can be adjusted to the degree, from a remote control or an app, to control shade and ventilation. They close automatically at the first drop when a rain sensor is installed.
- Fixed to the facade, two posts on the garden side
- Ideal for a narrow terrace of a row house
- Good balance of footprint and price
On a hollow wall, the fixing is done with suitable anchors to avoid damaging the facing.
It leans against the facade on one side and on two posts on the other, which limits the ground footprint. It is often the most discreet solution in a narrow garden.
- Four posts, independent from the house
- For a terrace at the back of the garden or around a pool
- Fabric, slats or glass roof
It requires a proper foundation under each post, especially on a lawn or soft ground.
Independent from the house, it can be placed where the sun is most pleasant, even at the back of the garden.
- Photovoltaic panels integrated into the roof
- Electricity production without touching the roof of the house
An interesting option when the main roof is poorly oriented or shaded.
The electricity produced by the solar pergola powers the motorization, lighting, and, beyond that, part of the household consumption.
What is the price of a pergola in Leuven?
Model, dimensions, motorization, and options can double the price of a pergola. Indicative prices including VAT, installation included.
| Type of work | What affects the price | Indicative price including VAT |
| Aluminum wall-mounted pergola with retractable fabric | Projection, width, motorization | 4,000 to 8,000 € |
| Bioclimatic wall-mounted pergola (approximately 12 m²) | Motorized slats, sensors, colors | 9,000 to 16,000 € |
| Bioclimatic self-supporting pergola (approximately 16 m²) | Four posts, foundations, dimensions | 13,000 to 22,000 € |
| Motorized vertical side awning | Width of the face, type of fabric | 1,200 to 2,500 € / face |
| Sliding glass walls | Number of panels, height | 2,500 to 6,000 € / face |
| Integrated LED lighting | Number of strips, variation | 600 to 1,500 € |
| Supplementary infrared heating | Power, number of devices | 400 to 1,500 € |
On-site, we check the facade that will receive the fixings, the slab that will receive the posts, and how to drain the water collected by the slats. The quote then details structure, options, and connections.
Example: for a row house in Kessel-Lo, a wall-mounted bioclimatic pergola of twelve square meters with rain and wind sensors, LED lighting, and a side awning often costs between 12,000 and 19,000 euros including VAT.
Steps for a pergola in Leuven
Open or covered pergola: the permit
An open slatted or canvas pergola is generally exempt from a permit. A bioclimatic pergola attached to the facade, with a waterproof blade roof, is often considered a covered construction. Depending on its size and location, it may or may not be exempt from omgevingsvergunning: this is checked before ordering.
The distances to neighbors
In a row garden, a pergola attached to the party wall or too high can disturb neighbors. One must respect the municipal rules of height and distance, and drain water from the blades onto your property, never onto the neighbor's.
VAT and aids
The reduced rate of 6% may apply under certain conditions when the pergola is attached to a dwelling over ten years old: this is checked on a case-by-case basis. There is no regional grant for a pergola, unless it includes solar panels, which are no longer subsidized in Flanders.
The benefits of a well-designed pergola
A custom shelter
Dimensions, colors, motorization, and options chosen for your terrace. Each pergola is made to the measurements taken on-site, to the nearest centimeter.
A durable structure
Weather-resistant powder-coated aluminum, stainless hardware, minimal maintenance. An annual cleaning of the slats and gutters is sufficient.
Integration with the house
Color matched to the frames, height aligned with the openings, clean connection to the facade. From the garden view, the pergola extends the house rather than being an addition.
An outdoor space usable from March to October
Morning coffee in the April sun, dinner sheltered from an August downpour: the terrace is truly functional.
A pergola closed on one or two sides further extends this period.
Waterproofing, snow, and lifespan
Real waterproofing, closed slats
With closed slats, rain does not pass through: water is collected in integrated gutters and drained through the posts. In strong winds, a few drops may enter from the sides, hence the usefulness of side screens.
Snow
Quality pergolas are designed for snow load. The slats should be positioned as recommended by the manufacturer during snowy days.
Closing the pergola on the sides
Side screens or sliding glass panels allow for closure. However, a fully enclosed pergola becomes another structure, similar to a conservatory, with different regulations to check.
Wind and sensors
A wind sensor automatically opens the slats or raises the side screens when gusts become strong. This is a useful safety feature when leaving the house with the pergola set for shade.
Lifespan
A well-maintained powder-coated aluminum structure lasts several decades. Motors and side screens require maintenance or replacement over time, without affecting the structure.
On a wooden terrace
The posts are not simply fixed to the slats. Footings or foundations are planned under the terrace, which sometimes requires removing a few slats at the post locations.
A pergola that matches the house
The shade of aluminum is generally chosen to match the frames or gutters. On a red brick facade, an anthracite or dark brown often integrates better than pure white.
Frequently asked questions about the pergola in Leuven
Does a bioclimatic pergola make noise in the rain?
A little, like any metal roofing, but much less than a polycarbonate cover. The thick slats and joints dampen the sound of raindrops. In heavy rain, it can be heard, but it does not prevent you from staying underneath.
What happens in case of a power outage?
The slats remain in the position they were in. Some models have a backup battery that allows them to close during a storm in case of a power cut. The operation is explained during commissioning.
Can a pergola be installed on an apartment terrace?
It is sometimes possible, with the agreement of the co-ownership, as the pergola alters the appearance of the building. The resistance of the slab and the fixing possibilities are also checked, which must never pierce the waterproofing of the terrace.
How long does it take to install a pergola?
Installation takes one to two days once the pergola is manufactured. A few weeks of manufacturing time should be expected beforehand, more in spring when demand is high.
A pergola installed before the nice days
Manufacturing times extend in spring when everyone thinks about their terrace at the same time. An order placed in winter allows for installation before May.
