Permits, frost resistance, and long-term maintenance

Paving a driveway or courtyard generally does not require a permit if the surface remains at the level of the existing ground. A declaration may be required if the paving significantly alters water flow towards the public road or if the impermeable surface exceeds a certain threshold set by the municipality, a point we systematically check before starting a project. Paving performs well against Belgian frost provided the foundation is properly drained: it is precisely the lack of drainage that causes most issues observed after several winters, much more than the material itself.

Another advantage of pavers compared to large slabs: a sunken or stained area can be repaired locally without affecting the rest of the surface, provided the same batch of pavers or a compatible batch is retained. Paving indeed uses smaller elements, which are more load-resistant and easier to repair on a spot basis, while large slabs, offering a cleaner look, are more difficult to repair piece by piece; the choice mainly depends on the intended use and desired style. In terms of timing, for a standard-sized driveway or garage access, expect generally one to two weeks, including excavation and foundation, with larger areas or complex paving patterns slightly extending this timeframe.
