1 - The type of insulation
The insulating product is a key criterion that directly affects the final price of attic insulation. Several categories of insulating materials exist:
- mineral glass wool,

- mineral rock wool,
- polyurethane.
Glass wool typically has a price ranging from 15 to 35 euros per square meter, while cellulose wadding costs between 5 and 50 euros per square meter. The average price of rock wool varies from 5 to 30 euros per square meter. If you consider using polyurethane, you should budget between 15 and 70 euros for one square meter. The price of these materials depends on their thickness and the format in which they are offered (rolls, flakes, bulk, etc.). Each has its own performance in terms of thermal resistance and durability.
Glass wool is often favored during thermal insulation work because it offers a good thermal performance and an interesting cost/effectiveness ratio. Rock wool is appreciated for its high fire resistance, making it a relevant choice in areas exposed to fire risks.
Cellulose wadding, made from recycled fibers, stands out as an ecological insulator. Polyurethane, on the other hand, is known for its excellent insulating capacity, making it a highly sought-after option for those looking for very effective insulation.
2 - The insulation method
The insulation method for attics can vary according to the needs and specifics of each project. The choice of technique will impact the overall cost. Among the available solutions, we find:
- the installation of rigid insulating panels,
- blowing,
- insulating rolls,
- spreading.
The installation of rigid or semi-rigid panels is a less common solution but has several advantages. The materials used include polystyrene, cork, polyurethane, or mineral wools. Although this method is very effective, it is less used due to its higher cost and the complexity of its implementation.
The blowing technique is the most common method for insulating lost attics. The craftsman uses a dedicated machine (carder or blower) to shred the insulation into flakes before projecting it. This technique is ideal for hard-to-reach attics, as a simple hatch is sufficient to inject the insulation. The most commonly used materials for this method are glass wool and cellulose wadding.
The installation of flexible insulation to unroll is used when the lost attics are easily accessible. This technique involves unrolling strips of insulation on the attic floor, overlapping and crossing the layers to improve thermal resistance.
The spreading method is a more manual approach intended for accessible attics. Unlike blowing, no machine is required: the insulation is simply spread by hand. This technique allows for precise installation but requires more time and labor.
3 - The area to insulate
The total surface area of the attic to be insulated is a key factor in assessing the price. The larger the space, the greater the amount of insulation required. Therefore, the extent of the area directly affects the final cost of the work.
For example, if the usable attic covers 100 m² and the cost of insulation is set at 30 euros per m², the price of the material alone will be 3,000 euros.
4 - The cost of labor
The labor rate for attic insulation varies from one company to another. The hourly cost for insulating lost attics generally ranges between 30 and 40 euros. Depending on the area to be insulated, the work typically requires half a day. The size of the attic therefore influences the time required and the amount of labor.
5 - The condition and accessibility of the attic
The general condition of the attic can also affect the total cost of thermal insulation. Additional costs should be anticipated if preparatory work or repairs are necessary before the intervention.
For example, if roofing or framework renovation is required, it will need to be included in the overall budget.
Similarly, if structural adaptations are needed to facilitate access to the attic, this will lead to an increase in the cost of the work.
